Arrived safely on Sunday 14 October 2001, having been thoroughly lost in Los Angeles Airport by misleading signs for transit passengers. This resulted in me and my bags being searched three times before I was allowed on the plane for Reno. A short and comfortable flight up from LA to Reno with some fascinating scenery which I failed to photograph.
Kay was there to meet me, we drove to her house only stopping for a quick emergency purchase of a new suitcase for me since one of mine had been torn in transit. I also bought a hairbrush - the one thing I forgot to bring with me!! I had been surviving on a comb for a week and it is good to be brushing again.
On Monday we made an early start and drove to Truckee, which is over the state line in California. We had an excellent breakfast at the Squeeze Inn and followed that with a good browse and shopping session in the various craft and glass shops in the town. Then we drove on to Lake Tahoe where there were more shops to explore and some great views to be had although the weather and the time of day were not very good for pictures.
Tuesday we drove up over the Geiger road to Virginia City where the sidewalks are all wooden and the shops are kept as they were during the town's boom time as a silver mining centre. A most interesting expedition including a visit to the newspaper museum and the consumption of a sarsparilla at the Bucket of Blood Saloon - I felt the sarsparilla was obligatory after all the westerns I have read and seen on the fillums. (I shall not feel the need to repeat the experience).
On Wednesday we drove out to Pyramid Lake which is where the Truckee river ends having carried its water from Lake Tahoe. A strange lake full of mystery and quite possibly magic.
Thursday afternoon I moved in to Harrahs in Reno itself to join the WorldPlay Live Bridge weekend.
Sunday 21 October Fly to Phoenix with MYRA - one small problem - my ticket
turned out not to have been changed from 26 October!
Oops - luckily the airline was kind and managed to change it so that I could
accompany Myra to Phoenix.
